First, I have to say I love this software. :-)

My question is: is it possible to change the background in the video editor? Every time I add images to the video overlay, the background is black. I'd like to make the background transparent if at all possible.

In your case background is what you place onto the main video line. You can put a video, a color, an image there.

Only the overlay can be made transparent. Transparency is not applicable to main video.
