You need to set the cursor at the beginning of the area to be deleted, then keep pushing left mouse button and drag the cursor to the end of the area. This way trim section will be highlighted. Right-click it and choose Delete Selection option (see the screenshot). The part of the file you highlighted will be deleted.

After adding effects to audio, output file size will be larger anyway. You can save your file with lower sample rate and bitrate settings, however, output sound quality will be deteriorated in this case. Note that adding effects means sound improvement, so this involves file size increase.
