Hi, I am trying to edit movies (The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) into a 4:3 format to capture the original IMAX aspect ratio for some scenes. I plan to use this for 4:3 projector viewing. However, when I do it in HD quality, it is in 4:3 format but in a 16:9 presentation with the pillarboxing. This won't give me the size I would like when viewing. (720x480 is in the 4:3 presentation but has pillarboxing as well.) I discovered the perfect sizing is 720x576, but the quality is really not that good (and for some reason is only working in .avi and not MP4). Is there any way to get "HD quality" in a 4:3 presentation as opposed to a 4:3 picture in a 16:9 presentation?

Thanks in advance!

Jason

Never mind. After extensive layman's research, it looks as if there is no HD for native 4:3 video (which seems stupid to me, as picture size shouldn't determine quality, but, like I said, I'm a layman). Looks like my best option is to go 4:3 in a 16:9 frame and get a 16:9 projector with a 1.3x zoom to blow it up.

Dear Jason,

I am glad you have found the resolution of the issue.

To get video of the better quality you need to select the input file parameters like bitrate, frame rate and frame size to be similar (or the same) for the output.
To check the input file parameter right click on the file while in AVS Video Editor - choose Properties.

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance to you.

Kind regards
