Is there a limit on the file size for converted files?

I joined two clips in Video Converter to make a MOV file which was over 5GB. The file was useless - no player would play it. And, although Adobe Premiere Pro would import it, there was no picture, only sound.

Should I have created several shorter MOVs, and if so, what is a working maximum file size?

all the best as usual

Actually, there is no limit for converted file size. However, I would say 5 gb is quite large for mov format.
Size of converted file depens on input files size and on output settings. Try reducing bitrate to get lower file size on output.

Regards.

P.S. Probably, Adobe Premiere Pro does not have video codec to play this mov file. Try using AVS Media Player to play resulted mov.

Thanks for your reply, Vlad.

1. Yes, 5GB is large. My question was: does it break some limit I didn't know about? It obviously does.

2. I know about file size arithmetic.

3. Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 handles smaller MOV files perfectly, which I created and imported no problem at all.

4. AVS Media Player not only wouldn't play the 5GB file, but crashed every time I tried it!

So, poor marks for this attempt at answering my question.

James,

May I try again?

I've investigated the issue further and... MOV file format has 32 bit file structure and there is a 4gb file size limit. Mov files larger than 4 gb will not play in video players.

Regards.
