This should be so simple. All I want to do is to transfer my DVD collection to my laptop external drive to watch them on my laptop or connect to a TV?
Can anyone advise on how I do it in Video Converter? AVI etc mean nothing to me - I'm a novice!!

If you would like to copy a DVD to your hard disc, we'd recommend using AVS DVD Copy. Choose your DVD-ROM as source (VIDEO_TS folder) and the output path on your external drive. Here is more information.

However, if you would like to convert your DVD movie to another format, ex. AVI, MPEG etc, you need to use AVS Video Converter. Select VIDEO_TS.IFO as an input file, then choose output format and profile, as well as output path on your external drive and start conversion. Here you can find step-by-step instructions.

Best regards

Thanks for helping with this. I have tried both of your suggestions before. The files that appear after the conversion are Video TS and Audio TS. There is not one single file that represents the DVD. Please advise.

VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders are parts of a DVD movie structure. In VIDEO_TS folder you must be able to find VIDEO_TS.IFO which contains the complete information on the movie. To play this movie back, you need to use (double-click) this file.
