I'm trying to decrease the speed in the preview window by dragging the speed
button with the mouse (and also tried using alt and down keys).

Although the speed number decreases when doing this, it almost immediately
jumps back to 1x.

Increasing the speed does not have any problems.

I am attempting this with an AVCHD file from my Sony TG-1.

I also don't show any Text presets in the window after selecting the Text menu option.
The pulldown menu in the upper right says "All Text" but none display.

I have uninstalled and then freshly downloaded a new copy of the software and still
have this and the "decrease speed" issue.

Is your file short? If so, in case you decrease its speed after only a couple of seconds of the video are played, almost immediately the beginning of the clip will be reached and, as a result, the speed will change to 1x.

Apparently Text.xml has been deleted from your PC. To restore the presets, please delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\AVS4YOU\AVSVideoEditor\Profiles
and
C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\AVS4YOU\AVSVideoEditor\Profiles

Then download and install AVS Video Editor anew: http://www.avs4you.com/Downloads/AVSVideoEditor.exe

Thank you very much for the answer on how to restore the Text presets.

It took a little more work since I am running Vista and there is no C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\ in Vista. I had to do some web searching to figure this out.

The trick is to run a search with Windows Explorer in Advanced Mode to show hidden files and it will bring up all instances of the AVS Profile files which I then deleted.

Also, the Profile folder in C:\Program Files is C:\Program Files(x86) in Vista.
