Hi all,

I just bought AVS because I found it could batch convert DVD episodes into individual files, whereas DivX Converter would combine them all into one long file.

I am trying to convert a DVD to AVI (or any format like MKV) but I am having a problem. AVS puts black bars at the top and bottom of the picture, making it smaller than it needs to be. DivX Converter does not do this, so I am thinking it is a setting problem somewhere.

I am choosing To AVI, with the following conversion options:

Profile: Video: H.254/AVC, 1200kbps; Audio: MP3, 192kbps

I left all other options as default, although I have tried forcing 4:3 and 16:9 in the input options, as well as custom ones. I've also tried all sorts of output formats and sizes. Doesn't seem to matter what I do, I always get black bars at the top and bottom.

I've included a screendump of the AVS picture compared to the DivX picture, and also my AVS settings. I really don't want to use DivX Converter as it means I need to cut up the episodes individually, but I am not willing to accept black bars at the top and bottom of the picture if they don't need to be there.

Can anyone think what may be causing this?

Ok, I think I have figured it out. It's actually the way the DVD looks when played in a DVD player. It's as though the DVD was not really encoded properly by the TV show producer. I just assumed that it was a problem with AVS.

I tried some other TV series that I own in DVD and they convert perfectly fine using AVS. It seems that DivX must be auto-detecting the black space and cropping it out, which is nice, but it's not a problem with AVS, which is simply converting what is actually there.

It would be nice if I could change a setting in AVS to do the same thing as DivX and get rid of the black space, but the crop functionality doesn't seem to do anything in the converter at all? I may have to crop it using the Video Editor.

Hello,

You can use Crop Scale function of AVS Video Converter to get rid of the black bars.

Best regards
