The default video bitrate when doing video capture from a DV source is 3500kbps under Video Capture (and DV to DVD as well). Is there a way to change this since the resulting MPEG2 is really bad.

We would advise you not to choose MPEG2 as an output format (in order not to convert your file at once while capturing), but to choose NATIVE output format. In this case resulting video quality must be much better. You will be able to convert the file captured to MPEG2 using AVS Video Converter afterwards.

I am trying to convert some old home video tapes to DVD and I would like to capture the video in at DVD resolution (720 X 480) but the only resolution I see is 320 X 240. Why is that?

It depends solely on your capture device which output settings are available in the program. If you do not see the preset needed in the program, we would recommend you following the advice stated in the previous post: capture your video in native format and then convert it with the frame size needed using AVS Video Converter.

Does anyone know if the PAL format is the only one allowed in this program? (this is the only option I received in trying out this program).

If so it's not very useful in the US.

Also are there any other AVS programs anyone knows that is limited to using the PAL format.

As for PAL and NTSC, these settings can also vary in the program in accordance with your capture device. If you do not find NTSC on the list, this must be that your capture device lets you record in PAL only. In this case we`d advise you to capture videos in native format. Then you`ll be able to convert them to NTSC using AVS Video Converter.

I have many 8MM and VHS tapes that I want to move to digital files and save. Most of these tapes have different events on them and will require editing after capture.

My hope/goal is to have all these files moved to one Blu-Ray disc that will have all these movies on it with menus...

But first I need to get them off the tapes... I am trying to understand this "Recommended Format"..for the capture

You are suggesting that I leave it at this setting and capture the video with the tearing on the bottom the screen. (see attached file)

and then use Video Converter to clean it up and then input it into Video Editor 4 for editing?

Am I on the right path... Any suggestions??

This is not normal that there is such a "tearing" when you capture videos. Please try updating drivers of your capture device: download the newest ones from the website of the device manufacturer.

If this does not help, please specify the exact model of your capture device.

To your software it looks like a USB 2861.

It is from Roxio and it does capture the Video.

If it leave it in the "Recommended Format" I see the tearing on the screen.

If I select a format with 640 x 480 the tearing stops... either with the Native, YUY2 or the MPEG2. This is how I have been
capturing files...

I have attached pictures of the device.

I have the latest driver from Roxio...

Please let me know what I am doing wrong...

Please click on Recommended format and note Video format (see screenshot). Then find this format under the ones available under MPEG or Native and try to capture the video using this preset.

I looks like I should be using MPEG2 ... I do not have an option to select 640x480 @ 29.97 like you have...If I had that option I would have selected that one... See my screen dump...(Recommended format options)

Why do I not have this option??? and your screen dump says "Default" not "Recommend Format"...

I have attached a screen print with 720x576 selected and it still has the tearing on the bottom of the screen...

How can I select the option of 640x480 @ 29.97??? and make this the "Default"

Do we need two options?... one the "Recommend Option" and one "Default"..... The software can select the "Recommend Option" and I can select the "Default" (Just a thought) Defuult will also select the correct video device input and sound that the user selects.

Sorry, the screenshot attached is for the previous version of the program, in the current version there is "Recommended format" option listed instead of "Default" (these options are equal). As already said, the format options (aspect, frame rate etc) are defined by a capture device, they are variable, in other words.

The "tearing" basically occurs in case the resolution identified by a capture device does not correspond with the settings indicated by its driver. Currently our developers are working on this problem, but they have not managed to avoid it. So for the moment you can only capture videos using other format parameters.
