Hi there,

Last week I ran the AVS updater and let it automatically install the latest updates, which included Video Remaker and two others. Since then I've had significant performance problems with Video Converter (8.0.2.493), especially when using multi-threaded mode. Typically I am converting .TS files in to XviD 720p AVI files, though I first noticed the difference converting .TS to MPEG.

Prior to the update, 45 minutes of .TS was taking around 10 minutes to convert to MPEG with multi-threading enabled and using 8 cores (Windows 7, x64). After the update, the progress indicator reckoned the conversion should take 2 hours. I switched to single-threaded mode and the conversion was done in about 25 minutes. This is still far longer than before where single threaded mode is generally only about 10% - 15% slower.

This is even more pronounced with XviD AVI conversion. Ever since I first used AVS on this machine the conversion speed has been at approximately 2x, so a 100 minute TS file takes just under 50 minutes in multi-threaded mode and perhaps 55-60 minutes single threaded.

Now the conversion in multi-threaded mode is running at about 0.4x taking over 4 hours to do a 100 minute TS file. Most weirdly, changing to single-threaded mode the conversion runs at about 0.75x, bringing the conversion time down to about 2 hours.

Something appears to have been seriously changed in the common files. Hopefully this can be investigated and fixed soon.

Hello,

Sorry for the late response.

Suggesting you reinstall all AVS programs using the instructions here and install the latest version.

Best regards.

Thanks, vlad,

I did have all the latest version but still did as you suggested, although to no avail. This suggested something is wrong elsewhere. I had made changes to my AV scan settings so ended up uninstalling my AV. This gave a slight improvement, conversion running at only 1/4 expected speed rather than 1/8.

As a test I tried AV Converter in a Win7 VM on the same machine and it ran at about 3/4 the speed previously achived on the raw host, so there's definitely some new software conflict going on that I can't find.

Guess I'll have to keep looking.

Which version of AVS Video Converter had you used previously, before installing updated AVS Video Converter?

I was already on version 8.0.2.493.

For a year since I got this current machine it has converted video at a speed of approx 2x. And that goes back to a version 7 AVS converter I used until early this year. Suddenly it's down to 1/4 x. The one thing I remember doing to AVS in between using at full speed and there being a problem was running AVS Update Manager to get the latest Video Editor. However, after stripping it all out again, that turned out not to be the root cause.

I went back through the Windows Installed Components list and removed a couple of other things that might have been installed around that time, including a DivX codec update. Still no difference.

I think the only way to fix this would be to scratch the machine and re-install the o/s. But I've too many things I don't want to destroy just for this one strangeness. I can run the conversions on another, slower, machine.

If I do get to the bottom of what has caused this, I'll let you know.

Ok, could you please tyr converting to AVI, but to the preset with H.264 codec? or you may just select this codec in Advanced>Conversion Options>Output file.

Please inform about the results.

I updated my video conversion from 7 to 8 and now when I convert my video files to DVD and try to play them in my player I get unsupported code or can't play this format.

Right, I tried the H.264 codec with the same 720p conversion parameters and the results are interesting. The conversion speed is about 1.8x. This compares to the previous XviD performance of just over 2x and the current performance of 0.4x.

Of course, I can't say what the h.264 performance was a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks.

Seems that it is the issue with MPEG-4 (Divx, xviD) codec, our developers are investigating it. I will get back to you as soon as there are any news. Meanwhile, please convert with h.264 codec or in single-thread mode.

Hi I just installed AVS video converter since I have been using the unregistered one (with the text in the middle) and it was working good.
So I bought the licence and un-installed the program and downloaded a new one and activated it.
How ever now when I try to decode a DVD file to avi (780*460 from my head) it takes over 4 hours (seri of 40 minutes) the display freeze compute runing on 100%CPU and crashes so I need to reboot!!!

This was not happening with the un-activated version!
It converted in 30 minutes with max 40% CPU.

I hope this can befixed because I really liked the program very much.

What can be the problem here???

Cheers

Hello,

Which profile with output settings do you select when convert to AVI format. It can be the issue with the codec. Please note my post above.

Best regards.

I am using AVS Video converter for the first time and the conversion time from DVD to avi seems excessive - ie 6 hours to convert a kids 25 minute DVD and double that for a normal movie DVD - am I doing something wrong?

Hello,

Please note the discussion above. Do you select the profile with MPEG4(Divx,xviD) codec for output in AVI format. Try converting to the profile with h.264 codec.

Regards.

Hi
I used trial version for converting M2TS files from HD camcorder to a single file. It finishes them in 2 hrs. There were about 30 files.
Again I used another software to convert all M2TS to Avi files.
Now I have activated the software and trying to merge all those AVI files to a single AVI file, but AVS4U converter telling it will take 5 hrs.
When all files are in AVI, it is supposed to finish by less than 2hr as in trial version.

Why is taking that much time ?

Thanks and Regards

I used the default setting , I think that is mpeg4 that comes with AVS Converter.
Now it is telling 60 hrs. I read forum to change the default to hcodec. I used that but it told me , it will take around 5 hrs.
While it is converting it aborted in suifficient space problem. I have 4GB ram and Windows 7 OS.

Please let me know what do I need to do convert.

Hello,

Thank you for the details.

Could you please specify the total size of AVI file you are trying to merge now?

Best regards.

Hi
The total size of m2ts format is 10GB. The total size of AVS converter is creating is 1.4 GB.
The trial version could finish in 2hrs for conversion but when activated the product it is taking around 5 1/2 hrs with H264 setting.
Is there something I could change in setting to make it faster.
My system is Windows 7 and 4 GB Ram Sony vaio.

Thanks and Regards

Hello Digamar,

Thank you for the details.

Speed of conversion does not depend on activation.

As far as I understand, in the trial version you converted 10 gb M2TS files within 2 hours and now you are trying to merge AVI files into AVI and the program gives your 5 1/2 hours estimated time. It depends on input file format. Seems that AVS Video Converter decoding m2ts files faster than avi files. Try boosting conversion speed selecting high priority in AVS Video Converter>Settings>Processing>Threads.

I hope it helps.

Best regards.
